Google Ads vs Meta Ads: which should a Dubai small business run first?

If people already search for what you sell — a plumber, a dentist, a printer, a visa service — start with Google Ads, because you are paying to appear at the exact moment someone is looking. If your product is something people do not search for yet, or is bought on impulse or appearance — a new cafe, fashion, home decor, a fitness studio — start with Meta Ads (Instagram and Facebook), because you need to create the want before anyone can search for it.

Most Dubai small businesses should run one well before running both. Here is how to pick, what each costs in the UAE, and the point at which adding the second one makes sense.

How do Google Ads and Meta Ads differ in what they do?

Google Search Ads intercept demand. Someone types "AC repair Al Barsha" and you appear above the results. Intent is high, the audience is small, and you pay per click — typically AED 3–25 per click in the UAE depending on the industry, with legal, finance and real estate at the top end.

Meta Ads create demand. Nobody on Instagram is searching for your bakery; you show them a reel of the croissant and let the image do the work. Intent is low, the audience is huge, and you pay per thousand impressions — typically AED 15–60 per thousand in the UAE — which often works out at AED 1–5 per click and AED 40–200 per lead depending on the offer. Our UAE cost-per-lead benchmarks post has the detail by sector.

The practical difference: Google clicks are fewer and more expensive but convert at 5–15 per cent; Meta clicks are cheaper and more plentiful but convert at 1–3 per cent unless the creative and offer are strong.

Which businesses should start with Google Ads?

Start with Google if most of these are true:

  • Customers know the name of your service and search for it ("laser hair removal Dubai", "company formation UAE", "banner printing Karama").
  • The purchase is a need, not a want — repairs, medical, legal, trade services, B2B supplies.
  • You can take a call or WhatsApp message within minutes during business hours.
  • Your average sale is above AED 500, so a AED 15 click is a sensible bet.

A Google Search campaign for a service business can be live within a week. Budget realistically: AED 3,000–6,000 a month gives enough clicks to learn something in 30 days. Less than that and you will not see enough data to make decisions. We walk through budget maths in how much to spend on Google Ads in Dubai.

Which businesses should start with Meta Ads?

Start with Instagram and Facebook if most of these are true:

  • The product is visual and sells on appearance — food, fashion, interiors, beauty, events, cars.
  • Nobody is searching for your specific thing yet, or search volume is tiny.
  • You want local awareness in a radius — a new restaurant in JLT, a gym in Al Nahda.
  • You can produce decent photos and short video regularly. Meta without creative is a car without fuel.

Meta campaigns also suit lead-generation offers with a strong hook: a free consultation, a 20 per cent launch discount, a limited menu. Expect to spend AED 2,000–5,000 a month to start, and to test at least three creatives at a time. See Meta Ads in the UAE: getting leads from Instagram and Facebook for the setup.

What do both platforms need before you spend a dirham?

The platform matters less than the plumbing. Before any budget goes live, we insist on:

  1. A landing page that matches the ad. Sending a "villa deep cleaning" ad to your home page wastes half the clicks.
  2. Conversion tracking. Calls, WhatsApp taps and form submissions must be recorded as conversions. Without this, neither platform can optimise and you cannot tell which ad paid for itself. Most UAE accounts we audit are missing it — see conversion tracking: why most UAE ad accounts are flying blind.
  3. A way to answer fast. Leads from paid ads go cold within an hour. A WhatsApp Business number with someone on it beats an email form nobody checks.
  4. A clear offer. One service, one price signal, one call to action.

When should you run both?

Add the second platform once the first is producing leads at a cost you can live with, consistently, for two or three months. At that point the two reinforce each other: Meta builds awareness and retargets website visitors; Google catches the people who later search for you by name. Brand searches rising on Google is one of the clearest signs Meta is working.

A common split for a Dubai service business at AED 8,000–12,000 a month is 60 per cent Google Search, 40 per cent Meta, adjusted quarterly on cost per lead. Retail and food usually invert that. Either way the decision should come from your own numbers, not from a rule of thumb — which is what our paid advertising service manages month by month.

Questions people ask

Can I run Google Ads and Meta Ads on AED 2,000 a month?
You can run one, not both. Split across two platforms, AED 2,000 does not generate enough clicks on either to learn anything. Pick one and give it 60–90 days.
Are Meta Ads cheaper than Google Ads in Dubai?
Per click, usually yes. Per lead or per sale, it depends on your offer and creative; for high-intent services Google is often cheaper per customer despite the higher click price.
Do I need Instagram followers before running Meta Ads?
No. Ads reach people regardless of follower count. A tidy profile with a few recent posts helps, because people check it before contacting you.
How long before I know which platform works?
Allow 30 days to gather data and 60–90 days to judge fairly. Pausing after two weeks because of a slow start is the most common way to waste a budget.
